This is info for 2016-17 Advanced and Practicum Students

For anyone who is planning to be in the Studio as an Advanced or a Practicum student in this important year - as many of you know, the plan is that I will retire from teaching at the end of this school year. (That means that it is my senior year too!)

I have been able to grow this program from 7 students over at DJCC when I first took that job in 1999 to the maximum I can take in the studio, which is 30 per class for 4 classes per year here at CCE. This is a great program now, with 3 years of available instruction and also a Career Prep class which serves as a professional internship. There are not many programs in the state with such an extensive program in Graphic Design and Illustration for high school students.

The reason that I am telling you about the growth is that I love and respect the students who have gone through this program as student leaders in the past, and I feel a responsibility with regard to the students who will come through it in the future. I feel that all who come through the studio are linked through the years and they often even run into each other as working professionals. It is important to me to see to it that the program remains healthy.

I need to have great leadership during my last year at CCE so that I can see to it that I pass a healthy and optimistic program to the next teacher. I CAN’T DO THAT WITHOUT YOU!

Image result for help!In order to plan for a smooth transition, we will institute a few new policies in the studio that I think you will find interesting. We will need a few people to take responsibility in some key areas.
·
  • One area will be a first year group advisory member from Practicum in each class. This person will be in charge of making sure that all of the group projects are going smoothly and assigning one ADVANCED MENTOR assigned to each group. They will have one mentor meeting per week to listen for problems that might arise and help resolve them.
  • Another will be "studio czar" for each class. This person will be in charge of seeing to it that the photo studio, the print room, the conference room and the studio look nice at all times - they can get a group of students to help them each week with Friday clean-ups.
  • Another will be blogspot contributor. This person will gather websites, software links, apps, thought of the day or any other suggestions for daily posts and get it to Mrs. Harman before the end of the week. They will be posted the following week.
  • Yet another will be camera equipment checkout in each class. This will be the person who is in charge of issuing camera equipment for checkout and being sure that it is returned the following class period with all parts intact.
  • Another will be ambassador for the studio for each classThis person will greet all tour groups and walk them through the studio and inform them about the program as they come through. They will show the photo studio, the conference room, and the main studio space to the students and discuss what we do in the class.
  • We will need two tour ambassadors for each class. These people will rotate dates for the main tours throughout the school. They will go on tours every other tour throughout the semester and work with Mrs. Jenschke as tours filter through the building.
  • Special projects coordinator for each classThis person will help to distribute work to the most experienced students in the studio as they come in from the community and district. They will see to it that all correspondence is handled professionally and promptly regarding the work that is done "for real clients."
  • Print request liason for each classThis person is in charge of seeing to it that Mrs. Harman is aware of student print needs. They will educate the people in the studio of the practicalities of such requests. This person needs to be a junior, because I want to be sure there is someone ready to teach the next teacher how to do printing on our plotter. This person will be trained to do printing on the large format printer and should be very patient.
  • Publicity liason for the website. This is the person who will coordinate stories and photography for the department for the LISD website as well as the CCE website through Mrs. Graves.
There may be further updates as we approach the beginning of the school year, but these are areas that we need help with for sure. I would like to get things organized and ready for the next school year, and that includes having leadership positions in place to help smooth the transition.

Thank you for considering one of these jobs. They are all jobs that I have handled on an "as needed" basis throughout the years, and it feels great to have them on paper for students to help with.
